Just a quick background on Mountain Day directly from the United Nations – International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day has its roots in the document “Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development” (called Chapter 13), adopted in 1992 as part of the action plan Agenda 21 of the Conference on Environment and Development. The growing awareness of the importance of mountains led the UN to declare to 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains. The first international day was celebrated for the first time the following year, 2003.

2019 Theme: Mountains Matter for Youth

International Mountain Day is a chance to significantly highlight that for rural youth, dwelling in the mountains can be hard. Immigration from the mountains begins to waived agriculture, land degradation and a loss of ancient cultural traditions. Education and training, market access, several employment possibilities and good public services can secure a brighter future for young people in the mountains. This year, youth will take the lead and demand that mountains and mountain communities become central in the national and international development programs; undergo more attention, investments and tailored research.

The mountains are under a menace due to climate change and are exploited more than their capacity worldwide. The rise in temperatures also leads to the melting of glaciers which influences the freshwater supply which in turn drives to disruption in the lives of common people.

About World Tourism Day

The World Tourism Day celebration was inaugurated by the United Nations World Tourism Organization in the year 1980 which is celebrated every year at 27th September. This special day was selected in order with all the laws of the UNWTO that came into power in the year 1970 which is acknowledged as the big landmark for the global tourism as it endeavours to aware people about the notable role of the tourism inside the international community as well as to exhibit how the social, economic, cultural, political values are affected by it globally.

This Year’s Theme

The theme of the day was “sustainable tourism”, in 2017. In 2018 the theme was “Tourism and the Digital Transformation”. This Year it is sustainable tourism worldwide.

This year world tourism day is celebrated with the theme of sustainable tourism worldwide. With the recent speech of Greta Thunberg at U.N. – it is quite visible that we all need to stop hoping and praying. It is time to act and make it happen. If we keep on hoping and praying for climate change, our nations, our environment, our tourism industry will extinct. The agencies and countries’ tourism boards with the involvement of government are focusing on sustainable tourism as a tool for development. They believe and suggest that to raise awareness the travellers shall make their purpose of travel towards climate change and environment safe tourism.

What Change We Can Bring

Keeping in mind tourism big magnetism thanks to its social, political, financial and also cultural effect, meriting, and value, UNTWO aims to feature and appreciate the dedication the tourism industry indicates in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals. Tourism has become the continuously evolving and emerging economic sectors worldwide because of the existence of various engaging and new destinations for tourists. So it has become the main root of income ‎for the developing countries.

This is, not the first time the theme is on sustainable change in tourism. It is seen for the past few years where issues on the environment, biodiversity, tourism and water, community development, cultural protection etc. have been raised and spread awareness about them. In fact, in the year 2017, the theme of world tourism day was “Sustainable Tourism – a tool for development”. This year the event will be officially organized in Budapest, Hungry, to spread awareness and promote people to take action. It will focus on raising consciousness on technologies and possibilities in the tourism industry among all operatives with the respective interest of helping the sector equip for future of work on tourism’s actual and inherent contribution to sustainable development.

Tourism For a Cause

I’m a traveller and have been to numerous destinations. I have started travelling 8 years back, initially, it was my passion and nomad heart that led me to new cultures, people, and diverse landscapes. Gradually with the years passing by when I saw nature’s aggressive moves in the forms of floods, witnessed snow avalanches, landslides etc. I used to wonder why nature is not happy and showing us it’s wrath. I used to think about the reasons for all incidences occurring. This gave a hunch to inculcate the awareness of climate change and cleanliness to the people who would I meet while travelling. Furthermore, would like to mention that I do not work for an NGO, neither an organization, I’m just a traveller and a writer. But I make sure I do my bit when I travel and keep my surroundings clean and organic. Will not stretch it much, but significantly wanting to emphasis on biodiversity, cultural changes, sustainable tourism to all the travellers out there.

The European Council on Tourism and Trade President Dr Anton Caragea says “Tourism is the best teacher on the planet.”

To end I leave you all with a quote:

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.
