What Is CAA & NRC – Are The Protests Right or Wrong?

Countrywide CAA & NRC Protests – Right or Wrong?

A lot is going in India in the last few days in the name of CAA or NRC or JNU violence. Let me make my point clear in this blog neither I am supporting nor I am against this. It is just my thought which I want to put in front of people who are so-called literates and are supporting or talking against this policy without knowing about it is i.e. what it is, which government has introduced and passed as a bill.

CAA stands for Citizen Amendment act where the government has allowed people who are Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhist, Jains, and Parsis who are living in India from long but has entered in our country before Dec 31, 2014, can apply for Indian citizenship and no more have to be in India as refugees. They will be given citizenship in India as per this new bill.

It is being said that when there was partition which happened in 1947 and at that time some of the Hindus decided to stay back in so-called Pakistan never got their right and came to India and are staying here from long but since there was no law and order in India where they can gain citizenship of the country. So this law is just an amendment to that and I feel it is right in a way for all those who are being stranded and away from their native land. On the other hand, why is the provision only to people of six religions, and not Muslims, and why does it refer only to people coming from these three countries? The Union government insists that people of these six faiths have faced persecution in these three Islamic countries, Muslims haven’t. It is, therefore, India’s moral responsibility to shelter them.

Is it right or wrong?

Well, to be honest, we are listening to a lot about it that it is going to take the fundamental right of one community and then people have to leave from here since they belong to other religions and what not – the saga continues. Whatever I have read and understood there is no mention that people who are a citizen of this country have to leave. The only thing which is mentioned in this act is that more people can come and stay in our country. Well, they were already staying in our country and maybe part of us in some or the other way which we might not be knowing.

On the contrary….

The other aspect of this is our country is already overburdened with the population and due to the bursting population, there is an impact on jobs, growth, literacy and everywhere. Now once these people if given a citizen to our country things are going to worsen as they will get all the fundamental rights which citizen of a country gets, which is not correct for the citizens who are already enjoying their rights as Indian citizens. Another thing which I think will happen is creating bogus documents proving that you are staying in India and part of this country before Dec 31, 2014, which is the cut off date to gain citizenship. One can imagine the level of corruption and forgery increasing in India, which already is at its high levels.

NRC – NRC stands for the National Register of Citizens and it identifies illegal immigrants in Assam which is done on the order of the Supreme court. After CAA was passed and made as a bill there is demand from a lot of people to make it implemented across India, though nothing has been confirmed about this.

If it is implemented across India I think it will be good for our country, why and how?

When we go to any country be it the US or London or even a small place like Singapore. We need to get proper documents and prove our identity to that country and then we are allowed to keep the foot on their land. If someone is living in our country and if asked to prove his identity which in the case of a legitimate person can easily do. In case you as an individual are a migrant and living illegally in any country I don’t think so any country will allow you to stay over since you not only use resources of the country but also take jobs and will be ready to work at any cost as you just need money for survival.

If the proper job is not available, then these people might do wrong things which can affect countries’ image and can affect a country’s economy in a lot of different ways. So my take would be we should at least give a thought as to why we should oppose proving our identity in our own country. Just because it is our country we should not prove but if we are going to another country and ready to do that then it is wrong.

Whatever happened in 1947 was that right? I don’t think so. This should not happen with anyone at any point of time in life. But to make something right we should not do something wrong as two wrongs cannot make right either. I would suggest people make an informed decision. Be aware of what it is and how it is going to impact. Even if you want to protest against it or in favour of the bill I please request don’t let other people suffer who are not taking part in it, not because they don’t want to, but maybe they are not able to due to their other responsibilities.
